Plant of the Month: Carissa macrocarpa – Natal Plum
Carissa macrocarpa, commonly known as the Natal Plum or large num-num, is a versatile and hardy shrub native to tropical and southern Africa. With its dense, spiny growth and large, leathery dark green leaves, it makes an excellent choice for security hedges and screening plants.
This attractive shrub boasts large, scented white flowers that bloom intermittently throughout the year, followed by plump, crimson fruits. These fruits, also known as Amatungulu in Zulu or umThungulu oBomvu, are edible and can be enjoyed fresh or used to make delicious jellies, pies, and sauces. In South Africa, they are popular as Amatungulu Jelly.
Carissa macrocarpa thrives in sun or semi-shade and is well-suited to coastal areas due to its tolerance of salt-laden winds. It attracts butterflies and fruit-eating birds, adding vibrancy to any garden. This shrub can be clipped into a formal hedge or used as an ornamental container plant.
