B.R.A. Increases Beach Patrols and Clean-Up Efforts Amid Rise in Fishing Activity
As we approach the annual Sardine Run season, Bazley has experienced a noticeable increase in the number of fishermen visiting our beaches and coastline.
The B.R.A. would like to stress that we do not have a problem with fishermen visiting Bazley, provided that they hold the necessary permits and respect both the beach rules and the environment which makes Bazley so special.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
Growing environmental and safety concerns
Over recent months there has been a noticeable increase in issues including littering, fires being made on the beach, dangerous fishing hooks and line being left behind, as well as human waste and defecation in beach and dune areas.
These issues negatively impact residents, visitors, wildlife and the overall condition of our coastline.
We would also like to warn beachgoers to please be vigilant when making use of the beaches, particularly those walking dogs or visiting with young children, as discarded fishing hooks and line can pose a serious safety hazard, especially in popular fishing areas such as High Rock.
Reminder of Beach Rules
We would also like to remind homeowners that the beach rules displayed at Bazley’s access points apply to everyone making use of our coastline. These include:
- No alcohol on the beach
- No fires
- No littering
- No loud music or unruly behaviour
- No glass bottles
- Fishing licences are required
Increased beach clean-up efforts
The B.R.A. will furthermore be increasing beach clean-up efforts, particularly around problem areas such as High Rock, where litter and discarded fishing tackle have become an ongoing concern.
Keeping Bazley’s beaches clean and environmentally protected remains an important priority for the community and Conservancy.
Additional Patrols and Beach Monitoring
In response, and in preparation for the busy Sardine Run period, the B.R.A. has increased the number of shifts our Marine Warden, Patrick, will be carrying out over the coming months.
Additional patrols will also be undertaken by Sthembiso from Gladiator Security in an effort to improve visibility and assist with monitoring problem areas along the beachfront.
