Bazley Conservancy: A Proud Member of Conservancies KZN, Safeguarding Our Natural Heritage

Our community is fortunate to have the Bazley Conservancy, operating under the umbrella of the Bazley Residents’ Association (B.R.A.), from which it derives the bulk of its funding. The Conservancy is a dedicated team of volunteers working tirelessly to protect our natural environment.

Their efforts are supported by their membership with the KwaZulu-Natal Conservancies Association (Conservancies KZN).

Through our membership we access expert guidance, practical resources, and a collective voice on wider environmental matters, making our efforts in Bazley more effective.

The work of the Bazley Conservancy

The Bazley Conservancy is the guardian of our local ecosystem, which consists of coastal and riverine forest, dunes, wetlands, and the surrounding marine environment. Their extensive and vital work includes:

Habitat Restoration: Removing Alien Invasive Plants (AIPs) to protect our indigenous flora, and replacing these, where necessary, with appropriate local indigenous plants.

Wildlife Protection: Conducting patrols to find and remove snares, keeping our animals safe.

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Testing the quality of the seawater around our beaches.
  • Keeping a watchful eye on wildlife.
  • Monitoring activities of beach users to ensure the protection of our marine animals.
  • Using strategically located trail cameras in the surrounding forests.
  • Monitoring of aerial spraying of sugar cane through close liaison with Illovo Sugar.

Sustainable Fundraising: Running a nursery and hosting events like the recent Food Festival.

Advocacy and Guidance: Drafting environmental guides for homeowners and liaising with departments like the DFFE on critical land issues.
