Enjoying Bazley safely with your dog: Guidelines for beaches and village
The Bazley Residents Association (B.R.A.) has prepared these community guidelines to promote responsible and considerate dog ownership on Bazley’s beaches and within the village.
Important: These guidelines complement, but do not replace, official municipal bylaws requiring dogs to be on a leash. Participation is entirely voluntary. The B.R.A. is not enforcing any rules; we are simply providing guidance to help residents and guests enjoy our beaches and village safely, while protecting Bazley’s wildlife and ecological integrity.
Bazley’s natural environment and wildlife are central to our village identity. These guidelines aim to protect both residents’ enjoyment and the conservancy’s ecological balance.
We understand that this is an emotive issue and have tried to approach it with sensitivity. While Bazley is a quiet village for most of the year, December brings an influx of guests, and it is important that we all exercise tolerance and consideration during this busy period.
Bazley Beach – Dog Guidelines
Once again a reminder that these community guidelines are proposed by the Bazley Residents Association to promote responsible and considerate dog ownership on Bazley’s beaches and within the village. They complement, but do not replace, the official municipal bylaws requiring dogs to be on a leash.
🚶♂️ Walking in the Village
- Dogs must be on a leash at all times while walking in the village.
- Owners are responsible for controlling their dogs and preventing any disturbances.
🏡 Dogs on Property
- Dogs may not roam freely in Bazley.
- Dogs must be confined within the boundaries of your property.
- As a conservancy, we must protect local wildlife from harm caused by unsupervised dogs.
🏖️ Dogs on the Beach
In Season (December, Easter, and long weekends)
- Dogs may be off-leash before 8 AM and after 4 PM (“off-peak hours”), provided they are under effective control.
- Between 8 AM and 4 PM (“peak hours”), dogs must remain on a leash at all times.
Out of Season
- Dogs may be off-leash at any time, provided they are under effective control.
General Responsibilities (All Year Round)
- When approaching other dogs, people, or wildlife, please leash your dog.
- Only bring socialised and well-behaved dogs to the beach.
- Always clean up after your dog and dispose of waste responsibly.
- Ensure your dog has access to drinking water and shade, especially in hot weather.
- Owners are responsible for any disturbance or damage caused by their dogs.

- Bazley is a protected conservancy area; dogs chasing or disturbing wildlife can have serious impacts on our ecosystem.
- Keeping dogs under control helps preserve local flora and fauna for everyone to enjoy.

- Homeowners should inform guests of these guidelines, particularly during busy holiday periods.
- Sharing these guidelines helps ensure all visitors enjoy the village and beaches responsibly.
⚖️ Responsible Discretion
- Owners should always use discretion and take full responsibility for their dog’s behaviour.
- Even outside peak times, dogs must remain under control to ensure the safety and comfort of all.
🐾 Safety and Health Precautions for Dogs at the Beach
🌞 Provide fresh water and shade: Bring plenty of fresh water and a bowl to prevent dehydration and stop your dog from drinking salt water, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or salt poisoning. An umbrella or pop-up tent is essential for shade to avoid overheating and heatstroke.
🔥 Protect paws: If the sand is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Avoid the beach during the hottest part of the day (typically 10 AM–4 PM)
🐶 Supervise swimming: Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Watch for strong currents, riptides, and marine hazards like blue bottles.
🚿Rinse thoroughly after: After your beach trip, rinse your dog with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and potential bacteria. Check for cuts or scrapes on paw pads.
⚠️ Stay alert: Keep a constant eye on your dog to prevent ingestion of dangerous items like broken glass, hooks, or large amounts of sand, which can cause intestinal blockages.
