Acts of theft and vandalism targeting our electricity infrastructure are a persistent problem nationwide, and Bazley is no exception. In the past two months, two attempted thefts at our substation were thwarted thanks to the vigilance of the security guard.
Alarmingly, cable theft is orchestrated by armed syndicates, as highlighted in a recent report by Frederick Janse Van Rensburg from Gladiator Security in Bazley, which included evidence of firearms recovered at the scene.
Thanks to the support of the adjacent sugar farmers, a security guard is permanently stationed at the substation. However, overgrown grass and weeds are compromising his ability to spot criminals. This underbrush also poses a risk to responders, who could be ambushed by hiding criminals.
The Bazley Residents Association (BRA) plans to clear the area around the substation to eliminate this cover for criminals. We have secured a contractor for an initial clearing cost of R6496, with potential ongoing maintenance. However, we need community support to fund this crucial work.
