The Bazley refuse cage was initially installed to assist individuals in Bazley who couldn’t utilize the regular refuse collection service. However, over time, the area around the cage has deteriorated significantly, posing both security risks and environmental concerns.
Surveillance cameras installed at the skips have revealed a high level of activity in the area. Apart from residents, non-Bazley individuals, including vagrants and undesirable elements, frequent the area, particularly the surrounding bush.
Vagrants access the cage, pulling out black bags and leaving household litter scattered across the forest floor, which damages the natural environment. This rampant littering has become a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.
To improve security and deter unauthorized access, the BRA has opted to restrict access to the cage. The cage will now be locked throughout the week and accessible only during weekends and daytime hours.
This measure is expected to significantly reduce littering and make the area less attractive to vagrants, while still providing residents with access to the cage for their refuse.
Lastly, we kindly remind everyone that the skips are designated for garden refuse only.
Improved Access and Security Measures for Bazley Refuse Cage
Here are the cage opening times:
Weekends: 08:00 to 16:00 (for weekend visitors)
Weekdays and nights: Under lock and key for safety and cleanliness
We’ve received feedback from several residents requesting weekday access to the cage.
In response, the BRA has acquiring additional keys for the cage door lock, available for purchase at R30 each from Brenda Angus.
