In our previous newsletter, we alerted residents to the devastating excavation and clearing of indigenous coastal bush by Ugu, between the Ndasingane and Sezela rivers. An area approaching 20,000m2 has been cleared of indigenous bush.
We engaged various authorities on the matter, and it eventually landed with the KZN Department of Environment (KZNEDTEA). The matter has been investigated, and it has been confirmed by the Environmental Officer at the KZNEDTEA that Ugu’s actions were unlawful and unauthorized.
However, it appears that Ugu has successfully appealed to a higher power to exempt them under certain emergency provisions. To quote the Environmental Officer: “Ugu will be continuing with the EIA for the pipeline (which goes up to Scottburgh/Malangeni). However, for the Bazley portion (which is about 6km, inclusive of the area the Municipality already started with), they will be working under provisions of an emergency situation, they have motivated and have been allowed for such. Once they are back on site, they have estimated about 6 weeks to complete work, and they will rehabilitate.”
In other words, Ugu is on the verge of clearing our bush while bypassing the requirements of an EIA and typical processes. This was borne out by the presence of a quantity surveyor in town last week. This represents a real and imminent threat that requires immediate action from BRA and Bazley residents/homeowners.
